ETEM Luxembourg

ETEM Luxembourg is a technical economical energy model which represents the energy sector of Luxembourg. It is a linear optimisation model which minimises the total discounted cost of the energy infrastructure (purchases/sales and distribution of fuels, investment and operation costs of technologies, salvage values, taxes, subsidies) while satisfying the useful demand in energy.

The model represents the following sub-sectors of the energy sector of Luxembourg:

  • Agriculture;
  • Industry;
  • Transportation;
  • Residential buildings;
  • Commercial/institutional buildings;
  • Production/transformation sector.
The model computes both the future optimal energy usages and the optimal investments in new technologies. To do that, it chooses amongst a large database of technologies, including the future generation of process. Given the activity of the installed technologies in the system, ETEM calculates the emissions of greenhouse gases (CO2, CH4, N2O) and air pollutants (NOx,VOC).

Implementation



The various component of ETEM Luxembourg are:

  • Energy System: The database which contains the description of the existing energy system, the projection of future demands and energy prices. It contains also the database of the future generation of technologies.
  • Instance parameters: the parameters which determine the time horizon (by default, 2005-2030). They are also the variables of the simulation (such as, constraint on GHG emissions, alternative projection of population).
  • ETEM.dat: the file generated by the ETEM data generator in GMPL format.
  • ETEM.mod: the model itself, written in GMPL.
  • ETEM optimisation model: The files are sent to the optimiser, the problem is generated and the optimal solution is found.
  • ETEM outputs: The solver print the output in a file using a raw format
  • Scenarios: a database stores the output in a proper format.
  • Sectoral emissions: The emissions calculated by the model are extracted from the database.
